NYC A Chosen-Few Competition Edit by Skate Life and Flip The Script
June 11, 2011Read the wrap up of the NYC Presents: The A Chosen-Few Competition from head organizer Ray Mendez below. “Saturday June 4th saw one of the first major street comps of 2011 go down in NYC. This year the New York City rolling community teamed up with the folks of A Chosen Few to organize and execute the NYC stop of this competition series. Grassroots skate events are nothing new to our city. However, the ACF is only the second skater run event series that has come from outside of NYC to hold an event here, IMYTA being the first. When Quinn Feldmann called me and asked if I would produce the event I knew that it would take the community at large to make it a success. And that’s exactly what happened. I Roll NY, Hector aka Jiggz & Carley Sanchez of Flip The Script, Dave Toro of ODNY, Adonis Taylor of Evotek, Angelo Ferrer of Art Of Rolling, Jon Ortiz, Christian Batista, Lord Brian of Shut Up and Skate, Kyle Sola, Ears, Shardy Nieves of Your Daily Juice & Kyle Radminski of Billy Hurricane’s Bar to name few.

“Our best wishes go out to Dave Hoteling. NYC decided to dedicate this comp to fellow rollerblader and close friend, Dave Hoteling who was very badly injured after being crushed by a truck while riding his bike home on memorial day weekend. We wish you could have been here brother, it’s truly a very tragic incident and I hope you recover soon my friend. Jon Ortiz had the pleasure of meeting with Dave’s parents and were shocked to find out that his skate friends had come to visit him at the hospital while he was still in the ICU. This is what brought the idea forth to show Dave’s parent how tight our community is. We all then agreed to get two huge poster boards and let everyone write on them, leaving Dave with all sorts of good things. We know this is a very dim and hard time for Dave’s family but we have only the best hopes that Dave will recover and be back along side his friends and family. OD is rooting for you Dave!” – ODNY.
“I was fortunate to attend and capture a bunch of fun times at the ACF comp that went down this past week. It was definitely a better turn out than most expected. Despite being kicked out from two spots (one being the second round stadium down rails in Staten), we were still able to have fun and make it work. This edit covers a third of the first round, all the way to the last round which was all captured on Staten Island. As you may have already seen in other edits covering this competition, most of the first round went down in Manhattan at Battery Park before getting kicked out. Unlucky for me because I had gotten there literally three tricks before getting the boot from the parks department. None the less, we still got some good moments on camera. Big thanks to Ray Mendez, Kyle Sola, Craig Benabu, Jon Ortiz, Flip The Script, AOR, Hyper Mike, I Roll NY, and all the skaters that came out to support! Last but not least, thanks to ACF for reaching out to NYC to organize such an event” – ODNY.

Shardy Nieves ONE Photo Journal #2
April 4, 2011“For about a year there’s been an image in my head of a photo I wanted to capture. And I wanted to make sure that when I did it, it was done right. Lighting and location and timing are always important to me, but what’s also important is the correct subject to photograph. For this shot I chose Evan Grimball, a 21-year-old New York City local. Taken on what was one of the cooler nights in the city this year, I set up two Nikon SB 600 Speedlights to create cross lighting, and had the busy sidewalk of 14th St. cleared (easier said than done). The photo of Evan’s Fishbrain came out exactly how I had visualized it, and I’m more than satisfied. Evan is an amazing skater, and definitely an upcoming talent that shouldn’t be taken lightly” – Shardy Nieves.

Freeze Fame: Ryan Loewy
March 30, 2011“I’ve been living in NYC for the past six months and one thing that I love is the accessibility to the community. You can go almost anywhere and find people blading. The other night I headed out to Union Square to meet up with Shardy Nieves and ended up meeting up with a group of bladers as well. Recently, I have been getting into the slower shutter/flash combo, which looks best at night. Evan was doing some Royales on this rail and I decided to set up shop and get some deals whilst at Union Square, using the slow shutter technique. After a few tries and tinkers with the lighting set up, I grabbed this deal. Shot at 1/5 of second at f/3.5, ISO 800 on a D300 with a Sunpak 544 camera off camera at 1/4 power triggered by Bowen’s Pulsars” – Ryan Loewy
