Check out the edit from the Puerto Rican Day Parade featuring Ray Mendez, John Stephens, Shardy Nieves and more.
“It took some doing, but we were finally able to secure our ticket into this years PR Day Parade. As we all know this parade is one of the largest gatherings in NYC. Viewed by millions in person & millions more internationally on television. For years I have skated through & shot the parade (with Daddy Yankee, the EBC crew, etc). Jon Ortiz, Joe Dedentro & started mobbin’ thru the parade back in the late 90′s. It is one of the most fun this to do on skates in this city. The energy is unsurpassed. The visibility couldn’t be greater. Security is always tight, but in the past we have been able to get ourselves in there. This year I called upon a friend & colleague to hook it up & he did. John Leguizamo is the Ambassador to the Arts for this years parade. And as you probably know he has his award nominated show Ghetto Klown on Broadway this year. So, here’s the deal. We get 30 Ghetto Klown shirts to rock & that’s our ticket in to the parade procession… Regardless of the limited supply of T’s we encourage as many skaters to come out & take part. I’ll get you in. This is a great opportunity to get our sport/culture seen on a world stage. The event is super fun & there is nothing like mobbin’ thru a sea of a few million people. Bring your cameras & anything you want to promote. Please be on time (10:30am at the meet location – 48th & 6th) as the parade starts promptly at 11am & we need to be within the line up before then to ensure our spots. I guarantee this will be a good time & for damn sure it beats standing in the crowd” – Ray Mendez.

Read the wrap up of the NYC Presents: The A Chosen-Few Competition from head organizer Ray Mendez below. “Saturday June 4th saw one of the first major street comps of 2011 go down in NYC. This year the New York City rolling community teamed up with the folks of A Chosen Few to organize and execute the NYC stop of this competition series. Grassroots skate events are nothing new to our city. However, the ACF is only the second skater run event series that has come from outside of NYC to hold an event here, IMYTA being the first. When Quinn Feldmann called me and asked if I would produce the event I knew that it would take the community at large to make it a success. And that’s exactly what happened. I Roll NY, Hector aka Jiggz & Carley Sanchez of Flip The Script, Dave Toro of ODNY, Adonis Taylor of Evotek, Angelo Ferrer of Art Of Rolling, Jon Ortiz, Christian Batista, Lord Brian of Shut Up and Skate, Kyle Sola, Ears, Shardy Nieves of Your Daily Juice & Kyle Radminski of Billy Hurricane’s Bar to name few.

“Kelly Matthews has been a staple in the NYC skate scene for over 15 years. She is 1 of the 2 ever World Champions from the NYC area (along with former FR team mate Ryan “Riggler” Jacklone. With accolades to her credit such as: being honored as one of the “50 Best Female Athletes” by the Women’s Sports Foundation at the 25th Annual Salute To Women’s Sports Awards, to being featured in their book titled “100 Greatest Women Athletes” in 2003. Along with X Games, Gravity Games, and Goodwill Games medals to boot. In a male dominated industry Kelly helped solidify the females place in rolling sports. For a decade & a half she has continued to be presence & an influence to women & men alike both inside & out of skate culture. Current day Matthews continues to be a force in the NYC skate community. Attending & participating in events & still shredding the streets of NYC, Jersey, and abroad. We celebrate Kelly, her 16th year of skating & all she has done for the skate community at her 28th Birthday Bash” – Ray Mendez.
“NYC Rolls” – A Group Photo Show
NYC is rapidly re-staking its claim as the World Capital of skate culture. Long the home of one of the strongest, longest running & most committed skate scenes world wide – 2009 marked the “rebirth of the giant”. The level of athleticism, talent & style that has been & is currently being produced by skaters out of NYC is unmatched by any city or scene on Earth. In this group photo show we showcase some of that talent – both in front of & behind the lens. With veterans such as Angelo Ferrer, newer talents such as Caesar McKay & transplants/phenoms such as Jeremy Stephenson (aka Jero) NYC is poised to produce some of the most amazing skate imagery the world has seen. NYC Rolls will showcase some select works from each of these photographers. This exhibition will run for 3 weeks at the CSV (Clemente, Soto Velez) main floor gallery with an opening reception on Sat Jan 28th 2010.

The majority of the crowd during the premiere screening.
Friday, December 18th 2009, a crowd gathers in the SOHO area of New York, NY. This isn’t your typical gathering of hipsters or college students who normally patrol the area though. This is something completely different. Groups of kids arrive in front of the St. Patrick Youth Center in beat up clothes and rollerblades on their feet waiting in anticipation in the cold winter weather for the biggest premiere in NYC this year.
